A guide to facial fillers at different ages
Who doesn’t want smooth, fresh-looking skin and plump lips? Ageing is inevitable and far better than the alternative, but that doesn’t mean we have to live with jowls or hollowed out cheeks. Fillers can help us either maintain youthful skin or restore volume. It’s important to remember that there are many different types of fillers that serve different purposes. An experienced injector will know what product is right for what you are trying to achieve.
I customize every filler treatment because no two faces are alike, but I can share some general observations about filler treatments based on age.
Fillers for mid-20s and to mid-30s
My clients in their mid-20s to mid-30s are usually interested in treatments such as skin-boosting microinjections that make their skin look dewy even during dry Winnipeg winters. Plumping up lips is another common treatment, but these days even my younger clients want subtle results—that is a shift away from wanting lips to look “done.”
Although microinjections will help skin hold onto moisture and sprinkles of Botox or Dysport will prevent lines from forming, I also encourage my clients to be diligent about applying sunscreen and I help them to create an effective skincare regimen.
Fillers for mid-30s to mid-40s
Both women and men start to notice tell-tale signs of ageing in their mid-30s such as crow’s feet, deep forehead lines, and loss of volume in the mid-face which contributes to the ”tired” appearance. Dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid will add hydration to the face and stimulate collagen growth which helps fight the signs of ageing, but in this age range, I also use fillers to replace lost volume which rejuvenates the face. As a person ages, the natural fat pads that hold the structure of the face start to shrink and drop, creating these undesirable folds or lines.
Rejuvenating your face with filler is both an art and a science. There are many options, but what works for your friend may not be right for you. During a consult, we will discuss treatments that will achieve the best results based on your skin type, bone structure, volume loss, and desired outcome.
Fillers for the mature face
Fillers for the 45-plus face should work together to restore structure and maintain skin integrity. At this stage, bone structure and fat pads start to shrink. You may have heard the term “liquid facelift.” What that term means is that we use a combination of the many fillers available to restore your face’s structure. We will soften your features with the ultimate goal of recreating the look of a younger you. The results are less dramatic than a surgical facelift and there’s far less, if any, downtime. You will need to top up fillers to maintain the results, but many of the fillers used for this purpose last from a year up to two years, with the “top-up” amount being far less than your original treatment plan.
The changes that bother most of my patients are usually due to a loss of volume in the mid-face. The “liquid facelift” restores volume loss which gives the face a lifted look, softens laugh lines, and smooths the jawline by minimizing jowls. This can be achieved with dermal fillers such as Juvéderm Voluma or Restylane Volyme.
I am passionate about restoring every area of my clients’ faces, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would probably be customizing mid- and lower-face treatments. Check out my gallery to see before and after photos showing the beautiful results that can be achieved by replacing volume in my clients' cheeks and chins and lifting jawlines.
It is my goal to help all my clients feel great. Book a consult with me to discuss how I can help you put your best face forward.
