Tricks to protect your skin and boost your summer glow

No one appreciates summer more than Winnipeggers. After surviving winter days when our city is colder than Mars, we deserve some fun in the sun.

I am one of those people who love to feel the sun on my skin when I am boating or having BBQs with friends, but I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that too much sun is one of the worst things we can do for our skin. The sun is the number one culprit that causes us to age.

So, what’s a Winnipegger to do? I suggest investing in a high-quality mineral sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens can irritate skin and cause acne breakouts for two reasons. One, they need to be absorbed by the skin to work. Two, they contain chemical ingredients, such as benzone, avobenzone, octisalate, and octocrylene, that irritate some people’s skin.

When you’re shopping for a mineral sunscreen, look for a product that lists zinc oxide or titanium dioxide or a combination of both as their active ingredients. Mineral sunscreens create a barrier, reflecting sun away from your skin as opposed to the chemical-based ones with ingredients that absorb UV radiation and mitigate the harmful effects. Exfoliating your skin is an excellent way to get your glow on this summer. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that can lead to a dull, uneven skin tone. For your face, I suggest using a gentle exfoliator such as Pro-Derm Night Cream, Glycolic 5 or 10%. There are exfoliators for all different skin types. Come see me so we can discuss which product is right for you.

For your body, you can use a gentle soap and a loofah to slough away dead skin cells. Moisturize immediately after your shower to seal in that moisture. My personal favourite body moisturizer is CeraVe lotion.

Skin boosters are another way to give your skin that dewy feeling you get on a tropical vacation. After age 28, we start to lose hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring molecule that retains water, keeping your tissues lubricated and our skin moist. Microinjection treatments increase the hydration level of your skin from the inside out.

When you get a HA microinjection treatment, the multiple microinjection sites stimulate your skin to produce more collagen. The combination of the HA infusion and the collagen production results in glowing skin that is hydrated from the inside out. As always, I am here to answer your questions about how we can protect your skin and boost your summer glow.
